Violence broke out in Baghdad's heavily guarded Green Zone on Monday when influential Shia preacher Muqtada al-Sadr announced that he was quitting politics.

According to Iraqi security officials speaking to CNN on Monday, hundreds of Sadr protesters rushed the building inside the Green Zone after the al-declaration.

The rockets were launched from the east of the capital's al-Habibiya and al-Baladiyat neighborhoods

Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has reportedly stopped all of his government's meetings at the Republican Palace until further notice

according to a statement released by his office. The prime minister has urged al-Sadr to "help in calling on the demonstrators to vacate from government institutions."

Al-Sadr said in a statement released by his office on Monday that he had opted to "not engage in political activities" two months prior

On Monday, Iraqi security personnel asked thousands of demonstrators to leave the Green Zone immediately.
